Opened in 1874 as Tolerton N.S., Rev. James Kavanagh described the schoolhouse as "newly-built, having one room measuring twenty-eight feet by fifteen, plastered and ceiled, the walls whitened within, a level boarded floor, a good fireplace and four windows". In 1943, a very fine site was purchased from Mr. William Willoughby, Mayo and a new school was built at the cost of £2,500. The new building was designed to accomodate 96 pupils in two apartments and was executed by Mr. Ed. Brennan, contractor, Coon, Co. Kilkenny.
On May 9th 1943, his Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Keogh, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, presided at solemn high Mass in Mayo church. The celebrant was Fr. W. Fanning. The school choir under the direction of Mr. Hughes sang Missa de Angelis; Mrs. Hughes presiding at the harmonium. After Mass, Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was imported by his Lordship the Bishop, following which he opened and blessed the new schoolThe local Coy of the L.D.F. under Leader Brosnan provided a Guard of Honour for the Bishop. The Doonane Pipers Band discoursed a pleasing selection of music. The following served as educators in the school
